New to all this?
We are regularly approached by small business owners who
have never had a website before and don't know where to
start or what questions to ask.
Below are answers to some of the more common questions we
are asked by people looking into developing their first
online presence:
How do I get my own Web address?
The first step to getting your own Web address (commonly
referred to as a "domain name") is making sure
that the address you want hasn't already been taken by someone
else. A quick visit to whois.com
will help you determine whether or not the name you want
is available.
Once you've settled on the perfect
domain name for your website, you'll need to register it
with one of several Name Server companies such as networksolutions.com
or godaddy.com.
This is an easy process and should only take you a few minutes.
What is a Name Server? A Web
Host?
In the simplest of terms, a Name Server is a computer that
stores your web address much like an address book stores
phone numbers. Its sole purpose is to listen for people
who want to go to your site. When it receives a request
for a particular page on your website, it tells your Web
host to display that page to the visitor who requested it.
A Web Host, commonly referred to as
a Server, is simply the computer that stores the files that
make up your website. Most websites are hosted by companies
who specialize in Web Hosting, though if you're really savvy,
you could host your website from your one bedroom apartment.
This is not recommended unless you're a total geek.
Do you offer Web hosting?
We highly recommend using mediatemple.net
to host your small to mid-sized website. MediaTemple offers
inexpensive, reliable shared-hosting with quality customer
service.
For websites with specialized backend
features such as eCommerce and content management systems,
we offer secure, dedicated web hosting
at very competitive rates.
How do I get my own business
email?
If you're going through the effort of creating a quality
web presence, you'll probably want to ditch that Hotmail
or AOL account and get yourself set up with something that
sounds professional.
Nearly all Web Hosting companies offer
email as a basic feature. Once your hosting account has
been setup, we can create multiple email addresses for your
business. You can access email either through a Web-based
method provided by your hosting company, or with software
such as Microsoft Outlook Express (or Entourage if you use
a Mac).
How can I control the content
of my site once it is launched?
This is the most common question we're asked. Different
businesses and organizations have very different needs.
As such, we can provide content management solutions from
the easiest and least expensive to highly customized database
solutions. Please contact us to
discuss which option best fits your needs.
How much will it cost?
The cost of any web project typically depends upon the amount
of content and the level of customization required to meet
your expectations. To request a quote, please use our online
form, or call us at 718.228.0794.
How do I win a FREE iPod Mini?
Sorry, we're fresh out of Free iPod Minis... Below are answers
to questions that people frequently don't ask:
Who are you?
We are a small company.
We enjoy working with people, and we enjoy problem solving
and design. We have plenty of good ideas and we enjoy sharing
them with our clients and seeing their sites grow and prosper.
We began our business in 2001
with the desire of combining our mutual love of art and
design with our fascination with the Web. Since then, we
have evolved into a successful Web design team, specializing
in custom Web design, online identity development, eCommerce,
flash animation and streaming media.
Why TransFuture?
With the advent of the internet, a new method for transporting
information was born. Today, information about everything
from consumer electronics to ancient chinese philosophy
is buzzing along on this information super-highway. We believe
the Web is perhaps the most powerful communication tool
in history. We also believe that the Web is a thinking medium,
that it has the potential to unite people globally, increase
cultural awareness and positively affect our future through
mass transportation and the transposition of ideas.
Why the big suit?
We only wear suits upon request.
